NEW DELHI:
New Zealand Cricket
has announced its squad, featuring the return of experienced bowler
Trent Boult
for the upcoming Twenty20 international series against
Australia
.
However, the hosts will have to navigate the series without the presence of key batsmen
Kane Williamson
and
Daryl Mitchell
.
Boult, known for his prowess as a strike bowler, has been included in the 14-man squad for the three-match series. However, his availability will be limited to the last two games, scheduled to be held in Auckland.
Similarly,
Tim Southee
, another seasoned seamer, will feature solely in the opening match slated for Wellington on February 21.
Having been released from his
New Zealand
central contract in August 2022, Boult has had sporadic opportunities for international duty, opting to participate in various domestic T20 leagues.
Despite a hiatus of 15 months from T20 internationals, his commendable performance during New Zealand's 50-over World Cup campaign last year positions him as a strong contender for selection in the T20 World Cup scheduled for June.
However, the absence of Williamson, who is on paternity leave, and Mitchell, who is nursing an injured foot, leaves voids in the New Zealand lineup. In their places, Rachin Ravindra and all-rounder Josh Clarkson have been called up, with Clarkson potentially making his T20I debut.
Mitchell Santner retains his role as captain, having previously led the Black Caps to a commanding 4-1 home series victory against Pakistan in January.
The stage is set for an exciting showdown between New Zealand and Australia, with Boult's return adding depth to the Kiwi bowling attack.
