NEW YORK (PIX11) – Black History Month was marked at an event in Nassau County today.
Hempstead Union Free School District hosted its Black History Month celebration.
On Saturday, dozens of students sang “Lift Every Voice and Sing” at Hempstead High School.
The students of all ages from Hempstead Union Free School District were there for the district’s Black History Month Showcase.
Group after group came forward performing to honor black history and share their interpretation of the theme “Celebrating African American Labor.”
Noah Montes is in the third grade.
The group from his school sang “Dream of Martin Luther King.”
He says it was important for him to take part.
“I wanted to express how dr Martin Luther King helped us black and white people be treated equally but expressing it by singing,” said Noah Montes.
Dr. Xavier Rodriguez is with the district.
He says it’s important to mark black history month.
“There’s a lot of figures that we overlook, but it’s important to remember all the contributions that African Americans have done through this country, and making a form in this country and the arts is a wonderful way of expressing it,” Rodriguez said.
Zeydi Guerra,16, took part and agreed.
“It’s something so important to do, especially for the communities. It’s a diverse community, so being a part of something like this is important.”
Students and organizers say black history deserves to be honored, and they were thrilled to do just that.
