NEW DELHI: Having witnessed a lot of
twists and turns
, the mayoral polls for Chandigarh were held on Tuesday with BJP's
Manoj Sonkar
declared winner.
Sonkar defeated AAP-Congress candidate

. This is the third win on the trot for BJP. Congress had abstained from the voting on both occassions.
Of the 36 polled votes, eight were declared invalid by the presiding officer.
BJP has 14 councillors in the house, AAP 13, Congress 7, and SAD 1. Apart from these Chandigarh MP, as an ex-officio member, also holds the right to vote in the polls.
Chandigarh MP Kirron Kher was the first to cast her vote after which councillors cast their votes ward-wise.
The elections, scheduled for Jan 18, were postponed after the presiding officer reportedly fell ill.
The mayoral polls were held after the directions of the Punjab and Haryana high court. In its January 24 order, the high court directed the Chandigarh administration to hold the mayoral polls at 10am on January 30.
