NEW YORK (PIX11) --- The migrant teen accused of shooting a tourist in the leg in Times Square on Thursday allegedly shot at officers before ducking into a subway station, authorities said.
The boy, 15, was charged with attempted murder, assault, attempted assault, and criminal possession of a weapon at his arraignment, prosecutors said. The teen is being charged as an adult.
"It was way beyond reckless," NYPD Commissioner Eddie Caban said.
The suspect was stopped by a store security guard for allegedly shoplifting at JD Sports on Broadway when he pulled a gun and fired at around 7 p.m. But the shot missed and hit a tourist in the leg. The teen then ran off and allegedly fired at the cops in busy Midtown streets. The officers didn't return fire.
"He shot at NYPD officers without a thought of who he might hit or who he would kill," Caban said.
The suspect got on a subway train and made it home before he and his mom packed up and went to Yonkers, where he was apprehended on Friday, according to court documents. The teen hid behind a wardrobe to evade police, officials said.
Prosecutors alleged the suspect admitted to his role in the incident. Two other migrants were arrested in the case. The suspect and his accomplices are from Venezuela.
The 38-year-old tourist from Brazil was treated at a local hospital for a gunshot wound to the left knee. She hid in the back of the store after she was hit, police said.
The teen pleaded not guilty at his arraignment and is being held without bail, according to court records.
