West Bengal Governor CV Ananda Bose on Friday slammed the Trinamool Congress government over instances of post-poll violence, saying that a "dance of death" was taking place in some pockets of the state.
The Governor alleged that the state government was not allowing victims of violence to enter the Raj Bhavan.
"The Chief Minister cannot defy the Constitution. A dance of death is taking place in some pockets of Bengal," Governor Bose.
Notably, the police on Thursday prevented BJP leader and Leader of the Opposition in the state assembly Suvendu Adhikari and the alleged victims of post-poll violence from entering the Raj Bhavan to meet Bose, citing Section 144 around the Governor's house.
The Governor said the delegation was stopped from meeting him even as he had issued written permission to allow them to enter Raj Bhavan. "I am shocked to find out that they were stopped," news agency PTI quoted him as saying.
Governor Bose said he had written a letter to West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee seeking to know on what ground the police had stopped the delegation from entering the Raj Bhavan despite written permission.
Adhikari and another person had moved the Calcutta High Court against this move by the police.
COURT ALLOWS VICTIMS TO ENTER RAJ BHAVAN
The Calcutta High Court on Friday ruled that Adhikari and the alleged victims of post-poll violence can visit Raj Bhavan and meet the Governor if permission is granted by his office.
A single judge bench of Justice Amrita Sinha also asked the Advocate General of West Bengal if the Governor was under "house arrest".
She said that if that is not the case, why were these people not allowed to meet the Governor despite having permission from his office.
SUVENDU ADHIKARI SEEKS PERMISSION TO STAGE PROTEST
Suvendu Adhikari wrote a letter to the Kolkata Police seeking permission for a sit-in protest along with the alleged victims of the post-poll violence near the Raj Bhavan on June 19.
Citing the example of when TMC workers staged a protest there in October last year, he said, "If you can allow a regional party to hold a political program at the venue, then I can see no reason why the BJP, a national party recognised by the Election Commission of India, can't be given the same permission."
GOVERNOR MEETS POLL-VIOLENCE VICTIMS
Earlier on Friday, Governor Bose visited Maheshwari Bhawan in Burrabazar and met around 150 people who were allegedly affected by the post-poll violence in the state. The BJP has alleged the Trinamool Congress's involvement in the incidents of violence in the state after the Lok Sabha elections, which the ruling party has denied.
The Governor said that he had written to the state government seeking a response on the allegations.
