NEW YORK (PIX11) -- Thursday is the first day of school for public school students in New York City.
This week, families have some homework to do.
School supplies, uniforms and clothing must be ready for the first bell.
Students have been participating in a shopping tradition in the city for over 50 years.
Cookie's Department Store has five locations in the Bronx, Brooklyn and Queens. It has welcomed generations of kids who want quality clothing at a reasonable price.
The location on Melrose Avenue is six floors. Shoes, backpacks, uniforms and clothing of all colors line the walls.
Marvin Falack is the store's co-owner and takes pride in helping students dress for success.
"It has been a very nice experience of the year seeing customers come back over and over again. Like we always say, we have your uniform," he said.
Jerome and his daughter Ava are shopping for her first day of Pre-K. He shopped at Cookie's as a student.
"First day, meet teachers. All the little stuff means something to me. I think I take it to the heart. You can't miss the firsts," he said.
The local kids chain's first location is open in Jamaica, Queens.
