Atlantic Avenue gets crosswalks, but will redemption follow?

BROOKLYN, N.Y. (PIX11) -- In an effort to address the alarming number of pedestrian accidents and fatalities on Atlantic Avenue, recently nicknamed the "Boulevard of Death," New York City has installed three new mid-block crosswalks between Nevins and Bond streets, Bond and Hoyt streets, and Hoyt and Smith streets. However, reactions from residents and businesses are mixed, leaving the question of whether this is enough to truly transform the dangerous thoroughfare.

Atlantic Avenue has garnered a grim reputation due to its history of pedestrian incidents, including two fatal accidents in 2023 alone. Local resident Matt Gallagher expressed skepticism about the new crosswalks' impact on speeding and reckless driving.

"We hear the horns, the aggression, the speeding cars," Gallagher said, unsure if the safety measures will be effective.

However, for businesses like Little L's Pet Bakery & Boutique, the news is welcomed with open paws. Owner Lenny Ford, whose shop sits directly in front of a new crosswalk, sees increased accessibility as a boon.

"It actually brings more business to us," Ford said, "because people can access us from the other side of the street."

City officials acknowledge the problem, citing 500 crashes in the past five years. New York City Council member Lincoln Restler, a strong advocate for pedestrian-friendly initiatives, released a statement praising the new crossings but calling for further improvements.

"These are a step in the right direction," Restler said, "but we need to do more to finally make Atlantic Avenue safe."

Gallagher's concerns reflect the lingering skepticism some residents hold.

"People are still going to drive aggressively," Gallagher said, "and speed, and run lights, and do U-turns."

Only time will tell if these initial steps are enough to turn the tide on Atlantic Avenue's reputation. While the new crosswalks offer a glimmer of hope, the question of whether they will truly redeem the "Boulevard of Death" remains open.
