Apple has begun offering spare parts for the iPhone 16 series, allowing users in the US and select other countries to repair their own devices. This is part of the company’s ongoing push to support user repairability, which started in 2022. While this service is not yet available in India, it opens the door for iPhone owners in participating regions to perform safe, do-it-yourself (DIY) repairs with official Apple components.
iPhone 16 users can now access various replacement parts through Apple's self-service repair store. Commonly replaced parts, like batteries, are priced at $99 for the iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus, and $119 for the iPhone 16 Pro and Pro Max. Display replacements, which are usually more expensive, range from $279 to $379 depending on the model. Additionally, camera assembly replacements cost between $169 and $249.
Apple is also offering repair tool kits for rent at $49 for a seven-day period. These kits include specialised tools that assist in safely disassembling the device for repairs. Besides batteries and displays, users can replace other parts like the rear camera system, back glass, top and bottom speakers, and the TrueDepth camera, which powers Face ID. Apple's repair manuals are available to guide users through each step of the process.
While this self-repair option can help users save on repair costs, Apple cautions that it is best suited for those familiar with handling electronics, as working with parts like batteries comes with safety risks. The company’s manuals include instructions and safety precautions to ensure repairs are carried out properly.
Looking ahead, Apple plans to improve support for third-party replacement batteries and displays, making it easier for users to choose alternative repair options. Additionally, used Apple parts will be supported for future DIY repairs, offering more flexibility and cost-effective choices for users.
