Apple
recently rolled out the second beta update of
iOS 17.3
and iPadOS 17.3 to developers for testing purposes. The latest beta update added multiple new features for registered developers. However, after installing it, some developers complained that the latest update bricked their phones as their devices were stuck in a boot loop. This issue has reportedly forced Apple to reportedly pull the update soon after releasing it.
How the latest iOS beta update affected users
According to a report by MacRumors, some
iPhone
users who tried to install the latest beta update took to social media platforms X, Mastodon and others to report the issue. Users who tried to update their iPhones to iOS 17.3 beta 2 found that their devices were stuck in a boot loop with a blank black screen that showed a frozen spinning wheel.
The report claimed that the only fix to the issue seemed to be restoring a stuck device. This might be the reason for Apple to pull the update, the report adds. However, once the bug is addressed, Apple will re-release the beta update.
Some affected users suggested that the iOS 17.3 boot loop bug could be related to the Back Tap setting. A log shared by developer Guilherme Rambo suggests that a Back Tap setting caused his device to crash. He also mentioned that there have been several other affected users who have Back Tap enabled in some capacity. Meanwhile, some others who had Back Tap enabled were able to install the update without facing any issues.
New features Apple added with iOS 17.3 beta update
Apple introduced the Stolen Device Protection feature with the latest beta version of iOS 17.3. This feature limits access to user’s private information in cases where someone obtains both the iPhone and the user’s passcode.
With this feature, users will need
Face ID
or Touch ID verification to perform certain actions. This includes accessing passwords in iCloudKeychain, turning off Lost Mode, making purchases through Safari with saved payment credentials and more.
Apart from this, there are other features that will also require verification and have a one-hour delay to access. This includes changing the
Apple ID
passcode, an iPhone passcode, turning off Find My and turning off Face ID.
The latest update also added collaborative
Apple Music
playlists. This feature allows Apple Music subscribers to share playlists with others and build shared lists of songs. Collaborative playlists in Apple Music are simple to use, can be shared with a link and even supports emoji reactions.
Apple is expected to release the stable version of iOS 17.3 later in January.
