Apple
released the public beta version of
iOS 18
, giving
iPhone
users an early look at the upcoming software update slated for full release this fall. While the beta includes several user interface changes and app updates, the most anticipated feature -
Apple Intelligence
- is not yet available for testing.
The
iOS 18 public beta
is available for iPhone models dating back to 2018, including the iPhone XS and newer.
Users can download it by going to Settings > General > Software Update and selecting the iOS 18 public beta option.
Apple recommends installing beta software only on secondary devices due to potential bugs and compatibility issues.
iOS 18: What are the new for iPhone users
iOS 18 introduces significant customization options for the iPhone's interface. Users can now place app icons anywhere on the home screen, including around the borders to showcase wallpapers. The Control Center has been overhauled with multiple customizable pages. App icons can be uniformly changed to dark mode or a single colour scheme.
Other visual updates include more colourful message reactions in the Messages app and a redesigned Photos app that uses AI to automatically organise pictures into albums and trips. The Safari browser now offers article summaries and auto-generated tables of contents.
However, Apple Intelligence, the company's new AI assistant announced in June, is not included in this initial public beta. Apple says the feature will be available for testing later this summer before launching officially in the fall. Apple Intelligence is expected to provide ChatGPT-like conversational AI capabilities, image generation, and enhanced Siri functionality.
The AI features are slated to work on newer iPhone models, likely the iPhone 15 series and recent iPads with M1 chips or later.
Additionally, there is also satellite texting available for the supported iPhone models when cellular service is unavailable, call transcription, a dedicated Passwords app, and the ability to transfer money by tapping two iPhones together.
Alongside iOS 18, Apple also released public betas for iPadOS 18,
macOS Sequoia
and watchOS 11. The stable release for all the OS’ is expected to happen in September.
