Apple
has officially unveiled the 2024 edition of its
Swift Student Challenge
, inviting students worldwide to showcase their creativity and
coding skills
through interactive
app playgrounds
. This year marks some changes, including an earlier application window and a brand new recognition category for outstanding submissions.
This year, Apple introduces the "Distinguished Winners" category. Out of the 350 overall winners, 50 exceptional submissions will be recognised and their creators invited to a three-day experience at Apple's headquarters in Cupertino, California. This exclusive opportunity allows
Distinguished Winners
to connect with fellow
developers
, gain insights from Apple experts, and get a glimpse into the world of professional app development.
All winners, including Distinguished Winners, will receive a one-year membership to the
Apple Developer Program
. This membership unlocks valuable resources and tools, empowering them to continue building and refining their apps, and even potentially submit them to the App Store.
What is the eligibility criteria?
Firstly, the student developer must be at least 13 years old in the United States, or meet the equivalent minimum age requirement in your jurisdiction (for instance, 16 years old in the European Union). Additionally, they need to be registered for free with Apple as an Apple developer or hold a membership in the Apple Developer Program. Furthermore, enrollment in an accredited academic institution or official homeschool equivalent is mandatory. Also mandatory is graduation from high school or its equivalent within the past 6 months and either be awaiting acceptance or have already received acceptance to an accredited academic institution.
Things to keep in mind
For the submission to be eligible, it must be packaged as an app playground (.swiftpm) within a ZIP file. The creation should not rely on a network connection, and any resources used in the app playground must be included locally in the ZIP file. Keep in mind that submissions will be judged offline.
The app playground must be developed using Swift Playgrounds 4.4 or later, which requires iPadOS 16 or macOS 13.5, or later. Alternatively, it can be built using Xcode 15 on macOS 13.5, or later.
Lastly, ensure that all content is in English to facilitate the judging process. Following these guidelines will help ensure that the entry meets the requirements for consideration in the Challenge.
