MANHATTAN, N.Y. (PIX11) -- The largest parade in New York City will take over the streets of Manhattan on Sunday in celebration of the Puerto Rican community.
Millions are expected to come out and celebrate all things Boricua this weekend as part of a collection of events that culminates in this celebratory parade.
Flags, costumes, music, and cultural icons will be the essentials of this parade with the theme Corazon de Boricua, meaning Puerto Rican in your heart.
The traditional parade kicks off at 44th Street at 11 a.m. and runs up Fifth Avenue to 79th.
Renown for being America’s largest celebration of Puerto Rican pride and achievement, the parade is an iconic platform for cultural preservation and collective legacy-building.
Organizers say it was born from the struggle of the Puerto Rican community in New York for not only equity and inclusion but validation in the 1950s. To this day, the parade continues to promote culture, arts, and education.
The grand marshal for this year’s celebration is salsa legend Tito Nieves.
This year, organizers plan to highlight Hawaii’s Puerto Rican community, which began in the early 20th century as Puerto Ricans immigrated there for work in the sugar industry.
