NEW DELHI:
Los Angeles Knight Riders
allrounder
Andre Russell
's delivery hit
Travis Head
's bat hard and broke the willow into two pieces during their
Major League Cricket
match against
Washington Freedom
at the Church Street Park in Morrisville on Sunday.
The Knight Riders, after being put in to bat by Washington Freedom captain Steve Smith, managed to score only 129 runs in 18.4 overs, thanks to superb bowling performances by Saurabh Netravalkar (4/35) and Glenn Maxwell (3/15).
Chasing a target of 130 runs, Washington openers Head and Smith provided a strong start of 79 runs to turn the run-chase into a walk in the park.
However, in the second over of their innings, Russell bowled a pacy short-pitched delivery that broke Head's bat into two pieces as he attempted a pull shot.
The ball hit the upper part of the bat, leaving Head with just the handle while the rest of the bat flew towards mid-wicket.
The unexpected incident left Head visibly stunned, and his surprised reaction went viral on social media.
WATCH:
Head went on to score 54 off 32 balls, including 2 fours and 6 sixes, to lead Washington Freedom to magnificent eight-wicket win.
"Was [pitch] on the slower side, took more spin than previous games. Nice to get a few away and nice to get a win. Nice to play the full fixture. Nice to get some luck and get away, it was nice to get a few away off the middle. [on the crowd] Good to feed off it, good to maximise when me and Smithy were going. Looking forward to the rest of the tournament," Head said after guiding Washington Freedom to win.
