Live television can be full of unexpected moments, such as turning a planned script into a comedy featuring surprise guests, rogue cats, and anchors trying to keep a straight face.

During CNN’s New Year’s Eve show, Anderson Cooper burst into laughter as John Mayer called from a cat bar in Tokyo, surrounded by feline friends.

The 46-year-old musician had joined Anderson and Andy Cohen on the annual broadcast program live from Japan, leaving the co-presenters, who were in Times Square, stunned.

While hosting CNN’s live New Year’s Eve show on Sunday (December 31, 2023) night, Anderson found himself in a giggle fit upon seeing John surrounded by a whole gang of cats.

As Andy noted that the Gravity hitmaker was calling from the peculiar catty establishment, Anderson, who was seemingly caught completely off-guard, couldn’t control his shrieks, despite being live on national television.

Throughout the entire segment, John kept a straight face as many well-fed cats inched by him during his interview. “This doesn’t look sanitary, John!” Andy yelled as Anderson continued to uncontrollably laugh.

The Grammy-award-winning artist, keeping a deadpan expression, casually replied: “I believe it passes all health codes, so I think it’s just fine.”

Whilst the guest continued to nonchalantly speak to Andy, Anderson was filmed sneaking off to the side, away from the camera, trying to fight his laughter.

“He’s gone. He’s off with the fairies here,” Andy quipped as he tried to bring back his co-host in front of the camera.

“Just the shot of the cat’s a** in your face is making him delirious,” Andy added as John preserved his serious poker face while Anderson tried to hold it together.

A clip of the segment quickly became viral on X (formerly known as Twitter), as a user commented: “Anderson Cooper losing his mind over John Mayer live from a cat cafe on NYE is purrfection.”

Despite being an emblematic New Year’s Eve event, a woman documented what it’s actually like to come to the Big Apple to watch the 12,000-pound ball adorned with thousands of LED lights and crystal panels descend as people ring in the new year.

Present amongst people waiting behind security bars since the early hours of the morning, she revealed that many individuals wore diapers and didn’t have any water or food, despite waiting for 18 hours before watching the ball drop.

Viewers found the segment hilarious to watch

Some even expressed they wanted Anderson’s laugh as their ringtone
