NEW YORK (PIX11) – Alternate side parking regulations will be suspended Tuesday and New Yorkers are encouraged to stay off the roads as officials prepare for snow.
Parking meters will remain in effect Tuesday but drivers were encouraged to stay off the road. The city issued a travel advisory starting Monday night and lasting through Tuesday evening.
“We’re strongly encouraging New Yorkers if you don’t have to go out, stay home. And please use public transportation, we want to minimize the number of vehicles on the road,” Mayor Eric Adams said.
By midnight, the Sanitation department would begin salting and plowing all bike lanes, highways and roads, according to Jessica Tisch, commissioner of the Sanitation department.
“Our salt spreaders and plows can cover a whole lot more ground a lot faster if there are not other vehicles in their way,” Tisch said.
Normal service was expected on MTA-run buses, subways, the Long Island Railroad and paratransit, according to MTA Chair and CEO Janno Lieber. It will be a “robust but slightly modified” schedule on Metro-North, Lieber said.
“If you are traveling MTA will be operating and we intend to get you where you are headed,” Lieber said.
Open Streets were also suspended for Tuesday, transportation authorities said.
The city is projected to see between 5 to 8 inches of snow by the end of Tuesday, officials said. Light rain could start dropping by midnight, shifting to snow by between 4 a.m. and 7 a.m., Tisch said.
The storm was expected to break between 2-4 p.m. Tuesday.
“We’re taking this storm extremely, extremely serious,” Adams said.
