All flights grounded at JFK, LaGuardia airports amid NY storm

NEW YORK (PIX11) -- The FAA issued ground stops at JFK, Newark International Airport and LaGuardia Airport Thursday morning as a major storm moves through in the tri-state area.

The ground stops were issued around 9:30 a.m., and it was expected to lift at about 11 a.m., according to the FAA. By 10:40 a.m., the ground stop at Newark was lifted, but flights were still seeing significant delays.

Heavy downpours, damaging winds possible in NY, NJ

Flights at all three airports were already seeing delays up to nearly two hours.

The National Weather Service issued a severe thunderstorm warning throughout New York City until 10:45 a.m. Thursday, and heavy downpours hit around 10 a.m. Hail and wind gusts up to 60 miles per hour were expected throughout the morning.
