Fourth seed Alexander Zverev is through to the semi-final of the French Open 2024 after beating World No.11 Alex de Minaur in 3 sets at Philippe-Chatrier. On Wednesday (June 5), the German star took 2 hours and 59 minutes to win 6-4, 7-6 (7-5), 6-4 against his Australian opponent. It was also the fourth time in a row that Zverev advanced to the semis at Roland Garros.

Zverev did not have luck going in his favour in 2021, 2022 and 2023 after losing to Stefanos Tsitsipas, Rafael Nadal and Casper Ruud respectively. He will be hoping to get lucky the fourth time as he again gets set to face Ruud in the semis. Earlier, Ruud rode his luck after Djokovic pulled out from his quarterfinal clash due to an injury to his right knee.

Zverev fights it out

Zverev went into the ascendancy in the first set with an early break of serve, but de Minaur earned the break back soon after. But at 3-3, Zverev again broke his opponent’s serve to come up trumps. The second set went right down to the tie-breaker when de Minaur took the upper hand with a 4-0 lead.

Yet again, Zverev showed nerves of steel to make a comeback and have the last laugh. De Minaur would have been disappointed after letting Zverev off the hook. Zverev earned an early break to take a 5-3 lead in the third set. But de Minaur did not throw in the towel as he disallowed Zverev from serving out the set and the match.

However, de Minaur could not hold his serve as an unforced error from him brought the curtains down on the match. As far as the upcoming semi-final is concerned, Zverev and Ruud have faced each other 4 times since they first met back in 2021. Both players have won 2 matches apiece.
