Former US President Trump's rival in the 2024
GOP presidential nomination race
will speak at this week's Republican convention in what seems to be a step towards putting
party unity
ahead of past differences following the
failed assassination attempt
on Trump. Initially, it was expected that former South Carolina Governor
Nikki Haley
, who served as UN ambassador under Trump was not invited to speak at the Milwaukee convention.
However, after Saturday's shooting, the GOP appears to be rallying around Trump.
Haley, who recently announced her support for Trump and his candidacy said, “The nominating convention is a time for Republican unity.
Joe Biden
is not competent to serve a second term, and Kamala Harris would be a disaster for America.”
She said the US is in a need of a president (
Donald Trump
)who can hold enemies accountable, secure the border, reduce the national debt, and revive the economy.
"We need a president who will hold our enemies to account, secure our border, cut our debt, and get our economy back on track. I encourage my delegates to support Donald Trump next week in Milwaukee."
Nikki Haley recently this week also officially released the delegates she won during the Republican presidential nominating contests and encouraged them to vote for Donald Trump. Haley, who was the last challenger to drop out of the race, had been the most moderate candidate, appealing to those opposed to Trump’s re-election.
Trump, 78, had expressed frustration at Haley for staying in the race long after it was clear she couldn't win the nomination. However, by Saturday, just before the assassination attempt on Trump in Butler, Pennsylvania, it was revealed that Haley had been invited to the convention.
Haley, who served as the US ambassador to the United Nations during Trump’s first administration accepted the invitation and will deliver remarks at the prominent Republican event, as announced after the failed assassination attempt.
