Affordable housing building for older adults opens in Brooklyn

BROOKLYN, N.Y. (PIX11) -- A new building in Brooklyn offers 100% affordable housing for older adults, with dozens of apartments set aside for public housing residents.

The Atrium at Sumner is located on Marcus Garvey Boulevard in Bedford–Stuyvesant, right across from the Sumner Houses. It offers 190 units of affordable housing, including 33 apartments NYCHA residents were able to apply for.

Idell Stith, 65, applied to the housing lottery in January. She found out in March that she won and moved into the new building this month. Stith got a beautiful one-bedroom apartment.

Mayor Eric Adams led the ribbon-cutting ceremony at The Atrium at Sumner. It’s all thanks to the New York City Department of Housing Preservation and Development, NYCHA, and the New York City Housing Development Corporation.

The building was designed by the renowned architecture group Studio Libeskind, known for work across the globe -- most famously the One World Trade Center.

The building is exclusively for older New Yorkers, and all of the apartments are taken right now. However, there are 32 affordable housing lotteries currently open across New York City. You can apply to them online at the NYC Housing Connect website.

On the next "Monica Makes it Happen Show," PIX11's Monica Morales will have exclusive listings, all thanks to a partnership with the city.

Guests on the upcoming show include hip hop legend and mogul Dres; Linda Hoffman, the president of the New York Foundation for Senior Citizens; Victoria Schneps, the publisher and owner of Schneps Media; and housing heroes who are giving $1 million to groups helping their communities thrive.
