BROOKLYN, N.Y. (PIX11) -- A fire at a Brooklyn building that houses an Orthodox synagogue injured five people Friday morning, according to the FDNY.
Fire crews responded to the blaze just before 6:20 a.m. The fire started inside an apartment kitchen on the second floor across from the synagogue, officials said.
Sixty FDNY members responded to the fire, according to officials. In one video posted to the Citizen app, you can see two fire trucks using aerial ladders.
At one point, at least three people were seen hanging outside of windows due to the smoky conditions caused by the fire, officials said.
At least two people were seriously injured in the blaze and taken to NewYork–Presbyterian Hospital via the Hatzolah EMS. The other victims were also taken to local hospitals and treated for smoke inhalation, officials said.
The fire marshal determined the blaze was caused by a cooking fire when food was left unattended.
