Colva:AAP
candidate
Joseph Pimenta
, who received support from the
INDIA bloc
, won the Benaulim zilla panchayat seat with a margin of 3,049 votes in the
byelection
held on Sunday.
Pimenta maintained a lead of more than 1,200 votes in the first two rounds of counting, and more than 1,500 votes in the third and fourth rounds.
He polled 5,670 votes while his nearest rival,
Grrayfrans Fernandes
who contested as an independent, polled 2,623 votes.
Former
Congress
general secretary
Royla Fernandes
, who quit the party after they declared that it would cede the zilla panchayat seat to AAP, contested as an independent candidate but polled only 1,840 votes.
The seat had fallen vacant after the administrative tribunal disqualified AAP’s Hanzel Fernandes as zilla panchayat member. Royla, who was instrumental in getting the disqualification order, has blamed Congress for her defeat.
She alleged Congress circulated a video stating that candidates other than the one fielded by INDIA were supported by BJP.
