Tomorrow is the last day to update your Aadhaar card online for free. The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) is allowing Indian residents to update their Aadhaar details online free of charge until June 14, 2024. The government authority encourages citizens to update their Proof of Identity (POI) and Proof of Address (POA) documents without incurring any fees to ensure the document is up to date and they face no inconvenience in Aadhaar-related work.

Updating Aadhaar details is not merely a formality but a significant step to ensure continued access to various government services and financial systems. Aadhaar, a 12-digit unique identification number, serves as a critical tool for identity verification across multiple platforms. Keeping your Aadhaar up-to-date helps the government prevent identity duplication and detect fraudulent activities, thereby enhancing security and efficiency in service delivery.

Why you should update your Aadhaar

According to the Aadhaar Enrolment and Update Regulations, 2016, it is mandatory for individuals to update their POI and POA documents every ten years from their Aadhaar enrollment date. This rule also applies to children's biometric details, which need to be updated on their Blue Aadhaar card at ages 5 and 15. Regular updates ensure that the Aadhaar database remains accurate, reflecting any changes in personal information such as address, name, or marital status.

How to update Aadhaar card online

  • Go to uidai.gov.in and select your preferred language.
  • Click on the "My Aadhaar" tab and choose "Update Your Aadhaar" from the dropdown menu.
  • On the "Update Aadhaar Details (Online)" page, click "Document Update."
  • Enter your Aadhaar number and the Captcha code, then click "Send OTP" to receive a one-time password on your registered mobile number.
  • Enter the OTP and click "Login."
  • Choose the demographic details you want to update (such as name, address, date of birth) and fill in the new information accurately.
  • Click "Submit" and upload scanned copies of the required documents to support your update request.
  • Submit your update request. You will receive an Update Request Number (URN) via SMS to track the status of your request.

Here is the List of Documents You Will Need to Update Aadhaar
Proof of Identity: Passport, Driving Licence, PAN card, Voter ID, Government-issued ID cards, Marksheet, Marriage certificate, Ration card.
Proof of Address: Recent bank statements, electricity or gas bills, passport, marriage certificate, ration card, property tax receipts, government-issued ID cards.

You can only update selected details online

For biometric updates such as facial photographs, iris scans, or fingerprints, you must visit the nearest Aadhaar Enrolment Centre. Use the UIDAI website to locate the nearest centre, provide your biometric information, follow the centre's authentication instructions, and submit the required documents for verification. You will receive an acknowledgment receipt with a URN to track the status of your biometric update.

But what if you miss the deadline?

After June 14, 2024, updating Aadhaar details online will incur a fee of Rs 25, while offline updates will cost Rs 50. Therefore, it is essential to take advantage of the free update window to avoid these charges.
