Pi is simply a circle’s circumference (the distance around a circle) divided by its diameter (double the length of any point on the circle to its center). It’s an irrational number that goes on forever without ever repeating itself, but most of us know it as 3.1415926535897, or simply 3.14. Pi Day is celebrated on March 14th because in some nations, such as the United States, dates are often written as month/day. As far as the origins of pi, mathematicians have been trying to estimate the number for thousands of years. And Babylonians and Ancient Egyptians actually came quite close to figuring it out. But it wasn’t until Greek mathematician Archimedes and Chinese mathematician Zu Chongzhi started working on pi that we came to our most accurate approximations (without using calculus or computers). And while the United States Congress first recognized National Pi Day in 2009, the holiday can actually be traced back to 1988. Three years after Frank Oppenheimer’s death, staff of Exploratorium, which Oppenheimer founded, met at a retreat in California to soul search and brainstorm. During this retreat, former staff physicist Larry Shaw made the connection that March 14th could be linked to the famous number pi. Larry and his wife decided to then fill the Exploratorium museum with pies on tea to celebrate the very first Pi Day. It’s actually considered the International Day of Mathematics as well, and hundreds of events are hosted worldwide in honor of Pi Day. Plus, if you live in the United States, there are plenty of Pi Day deals that you might be able to get your hands on. From discounted pizzas to free slices of pie, be sure to check out how you can have an enjoyable and delicious day while celebrating mathematics! Image credits: activityaftermath Image credits: thepieous Image credits: darce-vader1 If you’re wondering why pi is so famous, Al Jazeera explains that pi is an important component in physics, engineering and statistics. The beloved symbol used for pi is actually the Greek letter for p, which was chosen in the early 1700s, and it is meant to stand for periphery or perimeter. But today, of course, you might associate the letter with simply “pi” (or “pie!). It took him nearly 10 hours to recite that much of pi. So, if you don’t have time to memorize that much of it, feel free to simply learn 10 digits. It’s certainly a lot easier to say 3.141592653. Many math lovers even find a way to incorporate numbers into their pies, either putting the pi symbol on top of a pie or filling their pies with number-shaped slices of fruit. But if you don’t love spending time in the kitchen, you can always make some pie-themed art. Paint the pi symbol or paint an homage to Einstein in honor of his birthday. Image credits: Cat_Cosplay Image credits: corgi_zero Some of our high school warriors participated in Pi Day activities. They dressed up in pi costumes and learned different facts about pi, Archimedes, Albert Einstein, and other math facts. They then brought in kosher pies, cakes, and cupcakes decorated with pi symbols and shared information (and their treats) with the other students at lunch. It was a great time for all! Image credits: hebrewacademymiami If you want to celebrate Pi Day but don’t like sweets, you can always get a pizza pie instead. Perhaps you can arrange mushrooms into the shape of the pi symbol on your pizza, or you can bake a savory chicken pot pie instead! You might even want to host a Pi Day potluck, where all of your friends can bring pi/pie themed foods. And if you want to teach your kids about pi, you can have them measure the pizza or pie to show them that the circumference divided by the diameter will be pi! You can run 3.14 kilometers or miles, depending on how much you typically run, and then treat yourselves with pie afterwards. You can charge $3.14 for registration fees, and donate all of the proceeds to the charity of your choice. Sounds like a great way to spend this holiday! Students worked together to solve and graph 43 equations. The graph wound up being a graph of the pi symbol. And finally, we played the game "Pie Face". Each student twisted the game according to the digit of pi that we were on. The fun could've gone on forever, as pi never stops.
