6 shack workers attack Mumbai tourists at Calangute, arrested

Panaji:Calangute

police on Friday arrested six employees of Planet Goa Shack, owned by Luiza Coutinho, for ‘attempt to murder’ after they assaulted six tourists from Mumbai on the beach over “a petty issue”. SP Akshat Kaushal said that the incident took place after the shack was closed. This was the second incident within a week of Calangute shack employees assaulting tourists. On Dec 30, a Hyderabad tourist died after he was brutally assaulted by the Marina Shack owner and his staff at Calangute.
Police said that the current incident took place at around 3am. Nitin Agarwal and his five friends from Mumbai were staying at Vagator and visited Calangute on Thursday. While they were near the lifeguard stand on the beach, the stand fell, and hearing the sound, the shack employees, who were sleeping, rushed to find out what had happened.
At this point, there was some altercation between the shack workers and the tourists, which resulted in a minor assault. Police said that the tourist was shifted to Goa Medical College and later discharged.
“All the accused persons used to work as guards and waiters at the shack. The shack was closed when the fight erupted. These workers were sleeping,” Kaushal said.

“The altercation allegedly stemmed from a petty issue. The complainant has been discharged from hospital,” he said.
Kaushal said that an offence was registered, and they arrested Noufal PT, 28, a native of Kerala, Mayuresh Soudagar, 34, from Pernem, and Rohit Kumar, 27, Abhishek Kumar, 24, Vinod Kumar, 31, and Surinder Kumar, 28, all natives of Himachal Pradesh. “All accused are in custody. Further investigation is in progress to ascertain the details of the incident, motive, and circumstances leading to the assault,” Kaushal said.

Earlier this week, a Hyderabad tourist died after he was allegedly brutally assaulted by staff of a shack in Calangute. Bhola Ravi Teja, 28, died on the spot, after which Marina Shack owner Agnelo Silveira, 64, his son, Schubert, 23, and two shack workers, Anil Bista, 24, and Kamal Sunar, 23, both from Nepal, were arrested.
Calangute police said that the incident occurred after the shack staff refused to provide food to Teja and his companions since they’d already closed. Teja was part of a group of six tourists — four men and two women. A source said that the group already paid the bill, but at around 11 pm, they decided they wanted more drinks and food.
