MANATTAN. N.Y. (PIX11) -- Five of the suspects in the Times Square attack on NYPD officers are expected to appear in court on Friday.
While investigators continue to search for more suspects in connection with the attack, so far nine suspects are facing charges, according to authorities. Four of the suspects who were initially taken into custody were released without bail -- a decision that sparked controversy.
Body-camera footage released last week showed the chaotic lead-up to the brawl between a group of migrants and police on Jan. 27.
One of the suspects, Darwin Gomez Izquiel, 19, was charged with robbery and petty larceny after allegedly robbing Macy's inside Queens Mall, according to the NYPD. Izquiel, along with three other people, allegedly stole $608 worth of clothing and punched a security guard in the face when confronted, authorities report.
On Thursday, another suspect accused in the attack, Ulises Bohorquez, was arraigned – the judge set bail at $100,000. Bohorquez is expected back in court in April.
Last week, PIX11 News asked Mayor Eric Adams about the recent wave of alleged migrant crime.
"I don't have a goal of repealing sanctuary city, and I want to be clear on that. I have a goal of repealing any aspect where people are participating in criminal behavior, violent criminal acts," the mayor said. " They should not stay in our city. They should not be here when you're living off the benevolence of New Yorkers and tax dollars and you are committing crimes like what we saw in New York's, in Times Square."
Nine people have been arrested in connection with the incident. Authorities are still looking for more suspects.
