ELMONT, N.Y. (PIX11) --- A group of five kids was arrested after stealing a dog and trying to extort its owner out of hundreds of dollars on Wednesday, according to police on Long Island.

The suspects used the contact information on the dog's collar to send the woman, 34, a photo with the five boys holding her Pekingese dog and the $500 demand, authorities said. The owner then got a phone call saying the suspects had the pup near 181 Gotham Ave. in Elmont, New York.

The woman called the police, who found the dog and arrested the group. The dog was unharmed and returned to its owner.

The suspects were charged with grand larceny.
