4 dead, 2 injured after unrelated crashes in Queens: NYPD

QUEENS, N.Y. (PIX11) – Multiple unrelated crashes killed a number of people in Queens Sunday, according to police. 

At 8:20 a.m., a Volkswagen driver traveling westbound on 57th Avenue near 80th Street slammed into a moped traveling eastbound, killing both passengers, according to the NYPD.

One of the people on the moped, a man in his 20s or 30s, was pronounced dead on the scene, police said. The other, also a man in his 20s or 30s, was rushed to an area hospital and later pronounced dead. 

The Volkswagen driver crashed into two unoccupied parked cars then fled the scene, police said. 

Elsewhere in Queens, one person was killed and another two injured when a car overturned on Grand Central Parkway near Parsons Boulevard just before 7 a.m., according to the NYPD. 

One person was pronounced dead on the scene and two others had minor injuries, police said. 

Around 4:30 a.m., 23-year-old man was attempting to cross west on the Van Wyck Expressway near Liberty Avenue around 4:30 a.m. when an NYPD highway patrol vehicle responding to a different incident hit him, according to police. 

He was rushed to an area hospital where he was pronounced dead, police said.
