Three terrorists are believed to have been killed in two separate encounters between security forces and terrorists in Jammu and Kashmir's Kupwara district, officials said today. The encounters started after a joint operation was launched by the Indian Army and Jammu and Kashmir police in response to the suspected movement of the terrorists, officials said.
"Based on intelligence inputs about likely infiltration bids, a joint operation was launched by the Indian Army and Jammu and Kashmir police on the intervening night of August 28-29 in the general area Machhal, Kupwara. The suspicious movement was observed in bad weather and was engaged with effective firing by own troops; two terrorists are likely to have been neutralized," the army's Srinagar-based Chinar Corps said in a post on X (formerly Twitter).

The encounter in Kupwara's Tangdhar sector started yesterday evening after troops intercepted an infiltration attempt. The army then intercepted another infiltration attempt by terrorists in Kupwara's Machhal sector.
Security forces have also launched an operation in Rajouri district's Lathi area after information about the presence of terrorists.
All three operations were in progress when the last reports were received.
