NEW YORK (PIX11) – A scuffle with a security guard landed three men living at Randall’s Island migrant shelter in cuffs Monday evening, according to the NYPD.
Three men age 23, 22 and 30 got into an argument with a security guard at about 7:15 p.m. Monday, at which point the 23-year-old punched the guard in the face, according to the NYPD.
As the 23-year-old was being put into custody, a second man stepped in and interfered with the arrest - landing him with charges too, police said. A third man then got involved and ended up in cuffs as well, police said.
It’s certainly not the first moment of tension at the shelter; a similar incident on Randall’s Island was caught on video on Feb. 15. Police said a man was found arguing with security as onlookers yelled and objects were thrown at NYPD officers.
“Any time you have 3,000 people who are placed in an environment that they cannot work, they have to sit around all day, things like this have the potential to happen,” Mayor Eric Adams said of the Feb. 15 incident.
“I have to make sure our police department is safe and those residents who are there are also safe.”
