It wasn't a diamond or an ancient artefact that was auctioned off for Rs 1.4 million in the UK, but something far more unexpected: a 285-year-old lemon.

In a world where the rare and the historical often command staggering sums at auction, a peculiar item recently made its way to the block, capturing the imagination of collectors and the public alike. It wasn't a diamond or an ancient artefact, but something far more unexpected: a 285-year-old lemon.
This isn't a tale from a whimsical storybook but a real event that unfolded in Shropshire, UK. The lemon, discovered in the back of a drawer within a 19th-century cabinet, was brought to Brettells Auctioneers by a family who had inherited the piece from a deceased uncle. Little did they know, they were in possession of a citrus relic dating back to the time when George Washington was just a child.
Take a look:
The lemon, though dried and brown with age, bore an inscription that read, "Given By Mr P Lu Franchini Nov 4 1739 to Miss E Baxter." This message, etched into the fruit's hardened rind, offered a glimpse into its storied past. The auction house, initially photographing the cabinet for sale, decided to put the lemon up for auction as well, perhaps as a lighthearted addition to the day's lots.
To the surprise of many, what might have been considered a mere curiosity sparked a bidding frenzy. On January 31st, 2024, this centuries-old lemon sold for an impressive $1,780 (approximately Rs 1.4 lakh), far outstripping the cabinet's modest $40 sale price.
