BRIDGEWATER, N.J. (PIX11) – A Canadian man has been arrested in connection to the 1997 death of a 23-year-old woman in Bridgewater, according to the Somerset County Prosecutor's Office.

The body of Tammy Tignor was found in a wooded area on Nov. 4, 1997. She was strangled to death, officials said.

Advancements in DNA testing led police to Robert Alan Creter, prosecutors said. He was linked to an orange van Tignor got into in Newark before she was killed, according to prosecutors.

A warrant for Creter's arrest was issued in May 2023, which is when it was discovered he was living in Canada, prosecutors said. He was arrested in Winnipeg in June before he was brought to Somerset County on Nov. 26.

The Somerset County Prosecutor's Office, New Jersey State Police, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police and federal authorities assisted in the investigation.

A detention hearing is scheduled on Wednesday.
