QUEENS VILLAGE, Queens (PIX11) – Two teens who were stabbed at a Queens high school on Thursday are now facing charges in connection with the incident, police say.
Police charged the 17-year-olds with gang assault. One of the teens was also charged with criminal possession of a weapon. That teen allegedly had a 9mm gun, according to sources.
Both teens sustained minor injuries in the stabbing at Martin Van Buren High School in Queens Village, police said.
A 16-year-old was also taken into custody, police sources said. However, they have not been charged as of Friday.
Cellphone video obtained by PIX11 News showed a fight in a stairwell in the school.
The school was put on lockdown for about an hour after the stabbings, according to students.
“The safety and wellbeing of our students is our absolute top priority,” a spokesperson for the New York City Department of Education said in a statement. “NYPD immediately responded to an incident at the school. Students were placed on a brief soft lockdown and have now been dismissed. We will be providing additional emotional support to any student who needs it.”
The Department of Education set up metal detectors at the school on Friday to scan bags for weapons.
