BROOKLYN, N.Y. (PIX11) – An 18-year-old woman quickly jumped into action to help an 11-year-old boy after he was shot inside a NYCHA building in Brooklyn Monday night.
The shooting happened at the Ocean Hill-Brownsville Houses at 324 Howard Ave. around 11 p.m., according to the NYPD.
The 11-year-old boy, his older sister and other teenagers were hanging out at a stairwell in the building, possibly playing with a gun when it went off, sources told PIX11 News. The 11-year-old boy was shot in his forearm.
"I just saw his arm. He had mad blood dripping," said Fantaisya, an 18-year-old neighbor who heard the gunshot and quickly took action.
Fantaisya said she knew exactly what to do to stop the bleeding.
“I wrapped my sweater around his arm to stop the bleeding, then I just held pressure on it. After that, I took him downstairs. I knocked on his relatives’ door for help, and we all just called 911,” Fantaisya said.
Fantaisya said she learned the life-saving skills from her mother.
“I wasn't scared. I kept praying. I felt like he was protected. God was with us. He wasn't going to die," Fantaisya said.
The boy was taken to a hospital, where he’s now recovering.
Detectives are still trying to get to the bottom of the shooting. Police returned to the building on Tuesday in hopes of interviewing witnesses and finding out who had the gun.
