NEW YORK (PIX11) – The MTA will be changing out all of the lights in the New York City subway system from fluorescent to LED, the agency announced on Tuesday.
The project is expected to be finished by 2026. Demetrius Crichlow, the senior vice president of the New York City Transit Department of Subways, said that the switch will save the MTA $6 million in annual costs.
"It will be brighter," he said during a news conference.
The new lights will also help cameras catch better images when a crime occurs, the MTA said. It comes following a recent string of violence on trains, including a shooting on a Bronx subway that left one person dead and five others wounded.
In addition, a straphanger was attacked with a pipe and a tourist was slashed at two different subway stations in Queens last week.
