NEW DELHI: A two-story house in New York collapsed on Wednesday, resulting in injuries to at least
11 individuals
, according to officials. The incident occurred around 4 pm (local time), prompting numerous 911 calls reporting what sounded like an explosion.
"
Firefighters
arrived to find many of the victims already in the front yard but had to pull at least one youth out of a car buried in the rubble," said Fire chief Michael Monds as quoted by news agency AP.
Monds also said that police and fire authorities will investigate the cause of the collapse, noting that the house was built in 1920. Responding firefighters also encountered fallen power lines and a strong smell of natural gas at the location.
Upon arrival, firefighters discovered many of the
injured
already in the front yard. However, they had to rescue at least one young person from a vehicle that was trapped under the debris. Monds stated that the residents, consisting of both children and adults, were transported to Upstate University Hospital, with two individuals in critical condition.
As of Tuesday evening, fire officials confirmed all 13 residents had been located, AP reported.
